【Preface by the Mayor】
Finding a Path from the Past
Tainan, the first city in Taiwan recorded in historical documents, is a treasure land, with mountains and oceans, city and countryside, and enormous cultural heritage. All these above elements have successfully molded Tainan into a city which has gathered many talents. We can proudly say that no one can say they have been to Taiwan until they have visited Tainan. As a result of developments over the past several hundred years, Tainan has accumulated diverse culture, including marvelous craftsmen’s skills, rich folk traditions, the revitalization of historic sites, and the preservation of precious antiques. Tainan has always been second to none when it comes to cultural heritage, which is a great product of its rich historical development.
In 2014, Tainan’s City Government started the Great Tainan Cultural Heritage Series, which collates the research results of scholars and experts in various fields to create a systematic description of Tainan. These publications are important resources in developing “the study of Tainan.” This year is the fourth year of the series. Through the pens of many writers, Tainan’s stories are shared in an enchanting way, including Beiji Temple, the Remains of the Old City Gates and Walls in Tainan , Gueiren Renshou Temple’s Wangchuan Festival and Pilgrimage, and the Pilgrimage within the Nine Villages of Daciou, in Liujia District .
Keeping pace with the times while preserving its precious traditions at the same time, Tainan not only shines with its uniqueness, but also achieves its vision of being the cultural capital of Taiwan. Through the publication of the Great Tainan Cultural Heritage Series , people can learn this precious land’s stories and feel its heartbeats. The collective memory of a culture can be created by solidly grounding the soft power of a city, helping to find a new path.
Tainan Mayor

【Preface by the Director of the Culture Affairs Bureau】
Creating a Cultural Atmosphere and Nurturing Features of Tainan’s Cultural Heritage
Being the first city developed in Taiwan, Tainan is rich in diverse culture, a product of the development and racial integration over the past few hundred years. Today, since more and more people are into cultural tourism, cultural heritage is now considered a city’s treasure instead of just a beautiful burden. When we walk the streets of Paris, Rome, or Kyoto, we are still able to appreciate their elegant old buildings, as well as folk events that have been passed down from generation to generation. These experiences show us how cultural heritage has a positive influence on a city’s tourism development and promotion.
Gathering various precious cultural elements and passing them down is the Bureau’s key mission. In addition to establishing culture related facilities and restoring historic buildings, the Bureau also keeps working on publications highlighting Tainan’s cultural heritage. In pursuit of this goal, the Bureau has been systemically planning and publishing the Great Tainan Cultural Heritage Series, hoping to enrich the understanding of our culture, and recording the city’s charm.
In the book the Pilgrimage Within the Nine Villages of Daciou, in Liujia District, the writer has included maps and photos to present this unique folk event more vividly. In addition to the detailed descriptions in the history of the event, readers can also find first-hand information regarding the rituals.
This series aims not only at targeting general readers, but also at encouraging local cultural and historical workers to continue their research and help promote Tainan’s culture. Additionally, we also hope to provide more information for those who love knowing various cultures, encouraging them to explore Tainan, learn its customs and historic items from different perspectives, and experience the charm of this city. Only by having the public recognize the value of cultural heritage, can we build a sound foundation for preserving, maintaining, and cherishing our cultural heritage.
Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government

【Preface by the Director of Tainan Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage】
The Foundation Work for Cultural Accumulation
The publication of the Great Tainan Cultural Heritage Series is a foundation work for preserving, maintaining, and revitalizing Tainan’s rich cultural heritage. Huang Wen-po, an expert in Tainan’s culture and history, was invited to select a theme for each year’s the Great Tainan Cultural Heritage Series . We also invited scholars and experts from various fields to conduct research and publish their findings. By doing so, we opened a door for more people to learn about Tainan’s great cultural heritage.
This issue includes four books. The name of the books and the?writers are as follows:
Beiji Temple by Wu Jian-sheng
The Remains of the Old City Gates and Walls in Tainan by Cai You-hua
Gueiren Renshou Temple’s Wangchuan Festival and Pilgrimage by Huang Wun-huang
The Pilgrimage Within the Nine Villages of Daciou, in Liujia District by Huang Wen-po
Beiji Tempe, a national-level historic site, is located at Jiuling, which was the highest point in Tainan. Additionally, as this place was the highest point in the city, it also had good “feng shui.” In the book The Remains of the Old City Gates and Walls in Tainan, Duiyue Gate, Great South Gate, Great East Gate, the remains of the Minor East Gate City Walls, the remains of the Minor South Gate City Walls, Syunfang Artillery Fort, and the remains of East Gate City Walls will be covered.
This issue also includes two intangible items. Gueiren Renshou Temple’s Wangchuan festival and pilgrimage have been held irregularly, with at least twelve years between each celebration. In contrast, the pilgrimage within the nine villages of Daciou, in Liujia District, not only covers a vast expanse of territory, but also still follows the traditional schedule, so pilgrimages have been held annually for three consecutive years, followed by three years of rest.
I would like to thank the mayor and the director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau for their great support. I would also like to thank all the writers for their contribution. Publishing the Great Tainan Cultural Heritage Series is not only important in passing down our culture, but also in fulfilling the administration’s duty.
