Building a Bigger Stage to Celebrate the Culture of Tainan
After Tainan City and Tainan County were integrated, and upgraded to a directly controlled municipality in 2010, Tainan's Cultural Affairs Bureau started to publish The Great Tainan Cultural Series, which covers Tainan's rich cultural features in a diverse way. We can proudly say that these books are great guide books for those who are interested in learning more about Tainan.
In contrast to themes such as folk religion, highways, craft culture, and urban and rural landscapes that were previously explored, the focus this year is on theatrical culture in Tainan, which can be seen in our daily lives. Thus, in order to provide a new perspective for our readers, we invited three professors to contribute articles, as follows: "A Study of Taiwanese Opera in Tainan" by Lin Yung-chang, "A Study of Marionette, Jhu Ma Opera, and Che Gu Opera in Tainan" also by Lin Yung-chang, "A Study of Glove Puppetry in Tainan" by Yang Ya-chi, and "A Study of Beijing Opera in Tainan" by Tseng Tzu-ling. Moreover, this series includes works about Chinese herbal medicine shops and pastry shops in Tainan as well, which also present the richness of Tainan.
For several years, Lin Yung-chang, Yang Ya-chi, and Tseng Tzu-ling have been examining the theatrical culture of Tainan. Through their research, we may better understand Tainan's theatrical features. Moreover, not only are Cheng Pei-wen, author of "Chinese Herbal Medicine Shops in Tainan," and Chang Yun-shu, author of "Pastry Shops in Tainan," great writers with extensive field survey experience, but also, through the work of these two experts, the history of Chinese herbal medicine shops and pastry shops in Tainan comes alive. With the publication of The Great Tainan Cultural Series, Tainan's amazing culture has been carefully compiled, so that the glorious past of Tainan as Taiwan's cultural capital of Tainan may be more readily known.
As time goes on, Tainan's culture continues to develop further, and our work to root our culture in this land cannot stop. I thank the general editor, Huang Wen-po, the writers, and proofreaders for their great efforts and contributions. The Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan's City Government will continue to make an effort to build a bigger stage for those who would like to share their research on Tainan's uniqueness. Let's work together and hold a special celebration to honor Tainan's culture.
Tse-shan Yeh
Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government
