“Celebrating one’s sixteenth birthday” is a common memory of Tainan children. The seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar is the birthday of Vega, the protector of children. On this day, people offer all kinds of snacks at her temple in celebration of her birthday. From the snacks used for the offering to the hot dishes for a hungry belly and delicate snacks, the cuisine of Tainan bears the city’s history and culture. These snacks represent the happy memories and passionate pride of Tainan people.

Author: Yan Shu-Nu
Yan Shu-Nu is a children’s book writer and the chairperson of SCBWI-Taiwan. Yan has been the deputy chief editor of Hui ben Bangbangtang [Picture Book Lollipop] journal, and taught creative writing at the university. Her works have won numerous awards, including the Bologna Children’s Book Fair International Award for Illustration, Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award, National Award for Arts, Taiwan Golden Comic Awards Best Illustration Book, and the 2012 Golden Tripod Award for Publication. The rights of Yan’s works have been sold in many countries, and her writings have been included in Taiwanese elementary school textbooks. Illustrator: Zhong Yi-Zhen
Zhong Yi-Zhen who was born in Hualian, Taiwan. Zhong graduated from the Department of Art Design in Shih Chien School of Home Economics, and worked as an art editor for several publishing companies. Now she does illustrations while teaching creative writing of picture books and children’s illustration books. She always says her works include more than twenty illustrated books as well as two children. She enjoys accompanying old women in her village to draw pictures books and painting with students at school. Currently she’s in love with flowers and would not leave her hometown Hualian that is rich in mountains, ocean, and clouds.
