Preface by the Mayor

Accumulating Energy Through Culture

Culture has been the foundation for Tainan’s development. The city government has made a great effort to develop Tainan into the cultural capital of Taiwan. Therefore, no matter if they are tangible historical sites and buildings or intangible folk items and traditional art items, the city government endeavors to not only maintain these great gifts from our ancestors and pass down precious traditions, but also reactivate them with creativity. For example, Hayashi Department Store, the former Japanese Patriotic Women’s Association building, the former Tainan Meeting Hall, Wu Garden, Yanshui Beehive Rockets, Saikang’s Koah-hiun, and Dongshan Bi Xuan Temple’s “Greeting the Guanyin and Guanyin Parade.” Tainan’s city government hopes to raise Tainan’s status in culture and make the city shine not only on this island, but also throughout the world.

Publishing cultural books about a city is vital to root cultural “soft power.” Therefore, the city government has spared no effort to publish cultural books in various categories. The city government believes that through these books, Tainan will accumulate more cultural energy to open a gateway for people from other cities or countries to know more about Tainan and its history and culture. Great Tainan Cultural Series and Great Tainan Cultural Heritage Series are the two most systematic collections of cultural books published after Tainan City and Tainan County were integrated and upgraded to a directly controlled municipality. Great Tainan Cultural Series collects case studies of culture and history in Tainan in various categories, while Great Tainan Cultural Heritage Series focuses on officially designated historic sites/buildings and traditional art and folk items. With these two series, we aim at establishing a comprehensive picture of Tainan’s history and culture. We also hope that more Taiwanese cultural and historic workers can join us and make the study of Tainan truly unique in passing down the history and culture of Taiwan.

Through the efforts of the city government and the people who not only transformed Tainan into a cultural capital, but also used their creative power to preserve and advance Taiwanese culture, we aspire to build Tainan into a better place through culture, aim to keep working on all kinds of relevant projects and strive to let the study of Tainan create a brand new chapter for this city.

Preface by the Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau

Let the Flowers of Culture Blossom

With the development of modern civilization, people have started to see cultural heritage as a kind of fortune, instead of a beautiful burden. For example, countries such as China, Italy, Egypt, and Japan, with the rich heritage left by their ancestors, attract millions of tourists from another side of the world to see their unique culture and history firsthand. Therefore, we can say that cultural heritage may not only benefit a country/city economically, but will also bring positive energy to its tourism and cultural marketing.

Tainan, with more than 250 designated items of cultural heritage, ranks No. 1 in Taiwan. These great heritage items are the precious gifts from our ancestors. Therefore, we should feel proud and strive to enhance and glorify them.

After Tainan City and Tainan County were integrated and upgraded to a directly controlled municipality, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government is continually devoted to maintaining and also reactivating our cultural heritage items. The bureau has not only added the elements of literature and art into historic sites, but also complemented some old buildings with modern creativity. Moreover, people can be more close to Tainan, particularly through beautiful dances, composed through a combination of folk art and culture. In addition, the bureau has also invited several scholars and experts from various fields to publish the works that comprise Great Tainan Cultural Series and Great Tainan Cultural Heritage Series. Through all these efforts, the city government believes the flowers of culture will blossom beautifully in Tainan.

Publishing books that record our precious tangible and intangible cultural heritage items is an important policy of the city government. We will continue to exert ourselves in this way. I would like to give special thanks to our mayor, for his encouragement, the Director of Tainan Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage and his staff, for their hard work, all the writers, for their dedication, and the people of Tainan and even around Taiwan, for their great support. It is only through consideration for Tainan’s cultural issues that the beautiful atmosphere of a cultural capital may be created.

Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government

Preface by the Director of Tainan Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage

Our Duty, Our Mission

Cultural heritage not only represents the inner value of a city, but also provides spiritual guidance for a country. Although our nation divides cultural heritage into the tangible and intangible, both refer to a wide range of historic, artistic, or scientific cultural items or activities. After Tainan City and Tainan County were integrated and upgraded to a directly controlled municipality, the city government set up Tainan Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage to preserve, maintain, and reactivate the precious cultural gifts from our ancestors. The purpose for creating this administration is part of the objective to promote Tainan as the cultural capital of Taiwan.

The preservation, maintenance and reactivation of cultural heritage items are a long-term mission for Tainan Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage. The publication of Great Tainan Cultural Heritage Series is one of the main projects. In this issue, there are two tangible items and two intangible items:

Tainan Confucius Temple by Gao Kai-jun

Nankunshen Daitian Temple by Huang Wen-po

Yanshui Beehive Rockets by Huang Wen-po

Tainan’s Dongshan Jibeishua Night Festival by Duan Hong-kun (Alak Akatung)

In this issue, we first chose to compile two national-level tangible items: Tainan Confucius Temple and Nankunshen Daitian Temple. The former one is the foundation of official Confucian education in Taiwan, while the latter one is a temple that best represents folk religious culture. The fact that these two different items can be compiled and published into the same issue means that Tainan’s tangible cultural heritage is very diverse and wide in scope. As for the intangible items in this book, Yanshui Beehive Rockets is one of the most representative folk events in Taiwan, while Tainan’s Dongshan Jibeishua Night Festival is not only a national-level folk item but also contains great cultural meaning.

I would like to thank our mayor and the director of Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government for their support in publishing this issue. I also appreciate all help provided by the writers and proofreaders. Publishing books about cultural heritage items is not only the administration’s duty, but also our mission as cultural workers.
