Preface by the Mayor
Collecting Tainan's Craft Culture

Yen Shui-long, Father of Taiwan's Craft, said "Craft refers to any skills that add beauty to the utensils used in our daily lives." Therefore, we can say that apart from being a skill and a production process, craft not only shows the effort of artists, but also refl ects the value of aesthetics.

Tainan is not only the cultural capital of Taiwan, but it also possesses diverse historic attractions. After being upgraded to a directly controlled municipality, Tainan City Government not only gathered cultural historian from the former Tainan City and the former Tainan County, but also invited several young scholars and experts to participate in a special Tainan cultural research project. In this project, the aim is to not only investigate various subjects, but also widen the scope of research regarding Tainan's cultural heritage. Hence, readers will be able to have a new perspective about this beautiful old city. From the first series, Seeing Tainan from a Geographic Landscape Culture , the second series, Seeing Tainan from a Religious Culture , the third series, Seeing Tainan from a Highway Culture , and finally to this fourth series, Seeing Tainan from a Craft Culture , local experts illustrate various cultural images and historical stories about Tainan. Great Tainan Cultural Series consists of 4 series and 38 books in total. The entire series presents the different features of Tainan's diverse culture. Moreover, native pundits also have a chance to share their knowledge about this amazing city with readers.
Tainan is very rich in both tangible and intangible cultural heritage, particularly craft culture. This fourth series, Seeing Tainan from a Craft Culture , includes 6 traditional craft skills: metal craft, clay / wooden god statue decoration, paper-paste sculpture, temple ornament cutting and traditional fl oats, traditional fl ats, and ceramic art. Through this series, we hope that more people can know about the history, development, and distribution of traditional craft in Tainan. Moreover, by introducing different styles of artistic skills, stories of the artists and their families, and various production methods and features, the beauty of craft culture in Tainan will be presented.
Tainan is a historic city with diverse cultural attractions. To share the richness and diversity of Tainan's culture, Tainan City Government will continuously issue more cultural and historicalthemed publications. On behalf of the Tainan City Government and many historians of culture, I would like to thank the general editor, Huang Wen-po, and all the writers for their contributions. I believe that all these efforts will sustain and preserve our beautiful culture.

Preface by the Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau
Discovering the Vitality of Traditional Arts

The books in the Great Tainan Cultural Series not only highlight the close relationship that the people of Tainan have with the land, but also investigate, record, and research Tainan from various cultural aspects. Tainan is also the capital of traditional craft in Taiwan. Therefore, the fourth volume in the series focuses on craft culture, in order to give readers a comprehensive picture of the history and the development of traditional craft culture in Tainan.

As an old saying goes, "it takes many people's efforts to provide our daily needs." Thus, it has been the people of Tainan, which was the capital of Taiwan for almost 300 years, who have developed various traditional art skills through the years, including brick carving, jade carving, stone carving, clay sculpture, embroidered tapestries, coffered temple ceilings, woodcraft, main wooden construction of temples, sedan chair making, wooden god statue decoration, bamboo plaiting, metal craft, paper-paste sculpture, temple clay ornament cutting and decoration, temple painting, and inlaid wooden furniture. Although some skills have died out as society has progressed and grown, many more have been successfully preserved through the efforts of the government and many cultural historians. Some common tasks have even become art skills. Therefore, Tainan has also become the chief city of traditional art preservation in Taiwan.
Tainan is very rich in both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The implementation of the "Cultural Heritage Conservation Law" has strengthened Tainan's capacity to preserve traditional art skills and cultural heritage items by providing statutory authority. As society continues to develop and technology transforms our lives, we are losing more and more traditional skills. Therefore, it is important to document all these precious pieces of heritage as well as promote them for future generations. The Cultural Affairs Bureau has also adopted a systematic method to preserve and sustain Tainan's diversity, culture and history.
For this craft culture issue, the Cultural Affairs Bureau has invited Huang Wen-po to be the chief editor, while several historian of culture have also contributed to this project, including Chang Yun-shu (metal craft), Hsieh Chi-feng (clay / wooden god statue decoration), Tsai Chih-ting and Cheng Feng-sui (paper-paste sculpture), Chen Ding-lin (temple ornament cutting and decoration), Chou Wang-hsin (ceramic art), and the general editor Huang Wen-po (traditional fl oats). Additionally, to add to the prestige of this series, Hsieh Ling-yu was invited to write about Catholic faith in Tainan, while Duan Hong-kun and Steve Shao have been responsible for the work on Christianity in Tainan.
Now, I would like to invite all readers to enjoy this book and get a glimpse of the secrets behind Tainan's culture, as well as the richness of Taiwan's traditional arts.

Tse-shan Yeh
Director of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Covernment

A Study of Metal Craft in Tainan

/ Chang Yun-shu

1. Preface

Metal craft means combining craft techniques and a sense of art to produce beautiful metal creations. Being a historic and cultural city, Tainan was the political and educational center of Taiwan for a long time. Therefore, many talented people have gathered in this place and established many different industries. Metal craft was brought into Tainan by the Han people during the Qing dynasty. Since then, great craft masters have been cultivating talented young men, and have formed styles. Due to its growing prosperity in business and economics as well as its steady development through different periods, Tainan has gradually evolved into the chief city of metal craft in Taiwan.

There is no doubt that Tainan is the fountainhead of metal craft in Taiwan. From the various periods of Tainan's development and the integration of diverse cultures, Tainan has been constantly producing excellent works of art, using gold, silver, tin, or copper. In particular, gods' crowns and religious implements made in Tainan are the best in Taiwan. Moreover, Tainan figures prominently in contemporary metal craft, as more and more young craftsmen have opportunities to receive Western training and education in both art and modern metal craft. With a broader perspective, younger generations are able to break free from the barriers of traditional material and techniques. Through their efforts, Tainan's metal craft can surely look forward to a brand new chapter.
